Slightly less convenient but a great deal less expensive,is the Coaster Commuter Train, which can be boarded at the Coaster/AmTrac terminal in downtown San Diego. The terminal is reached by boarding Transit System Bus #992 at airport. The regular price is $2.25, but seniors (past 60) and disabled are charged $1.10 for the short bus ride from the airport into downtown San Diego. The Coaster ride to Solana Beach Station takes about 30 minutes. The station is about 1.5 miles from the hotel and the hotel shuttle will serve guests that have requested to be picked up. For anyone flying into Los Angeles International, the AmTrac ride down the coast through Camp Pendleton is the best option for replacing a rentalcar. LAX is almost 20 miles from Union Station into downtown LA where AmTrac would be boarded. At the airiport there's an express bus to the station called the "Flyaway Union Station" and it costs $7.00. Of course there's taxi service too. The AmTrac from Union Station to Solana Beach costs $29 coach (seniors over 62 get a 15% discount, AAA gets 10% off), $42 business class (no discount)! It's a relaxing 2 hours and 5 minutes which is worth considering especially if you're not into taking on a tough competative sport like LA traffic.
