Homecoming 250 invites you to celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States Marine Corps at the birthplace of one of its most cherished traditions — the Marine Corps Birthday Ball.  When Commandant John A. Lejeune fathered the Corps’ birthday traditions in the 1920s, he decided that Marines should start celebrating the Marine Corps’ November 10 birthday with a ball, and that the first ball should be held in Philadelphia because that is where the Marines were founded.  To celebrate the 150th Birthday of the Marine Corps, the first recorded Marine Corps Birthday Ball was held on November 10, 1925, in Philadelphia.  Guests included the Secretary of the Navy, Commandant Lejeune, and Marine hero Smedley Butler.
